Road project to add turn lanes at Capshaw Road and Wall Triana Highway

Traffic back-ups at one of Madison County's busiest four-way intersections will soon be eliminated this later this summer as a 120-day, $191,700 widening project at Capshaw Road and Wall Triana Highway is now under way.
The intersection, which is located in the city limits of Huntsville – a mile north of U.S. Highway 72, is considered one of the busiest four-way intersections in North Alabama with thousands of Madison County motorists passing through it each day. The city of Huntsville will spend $191,700 to widen all four approaches to the intersection. Each approach will include a left turn lane. A $60,000 signal will also be installed.
According to Dennis Thompson, a traffic engineer with the city of Huntsville, APAC will do all of the construction work at the intersection.
"The project began on May 6 and it is expected to be completed by August," Thompson said. "On the west approach to the intersection, a right turn lane will be added. This will significantly ease the number of traffic back-ups that occur at this intersection each day."
Thompson said he is not aware of any other intersection improvement projects in the Harvest, Monrovia and Toney areas of Madison County where several four-way intersections are experiencing traffic back-ups during the morning and afternoon commute hours.
An APAC engineer at the Capshaw Road and Wall Triana Highway intersection project said Wall Triana – north of Highway 72, is no longer big enough to accommodate the volume of traffic that flows on the roadway each day. He said most of the roads north of Madison were country roads with very few residents.
