The mother of a Madison military woman who is now serving in Afghanistan says she knew her daughter would choose a career in the armed forces and she's proud of what her she is doing.
A year after the United States began its military operation to free Afghanistan from the Taliban's rule, Army Pfc. Destanie Frifth, daughter of Marvin and Jackie Frifth of Madison, has been deployed to an outpost in support of Operation Enduring Freedom since this past summer.
Frifth works as a personnel specialist.
"I work for an explosive ordinance company – the soldiers who are responsible for identifying and removing unexploded mines and bombs," Frifth said. "My job is basically to keep track of the soldiers. I process daily reports that let commanders know where the soldiers are and where they will be over the next 24 to 48 hours."
In spite of enduring working conditions, Frifth said being a part of Operation Enduring Freedom makes up for the hardships she may encounter.
"Life here isn't too much different from back home, except for the dust storms and the living conditions," Frifth said. "We are working full days seven days a week, but it's not too bad. I'm proud to be here supporting my country and hopefully the people back home support us as well."
Jackie Frith said through the use of the Internet and Web cam's, they are able to keep in contact with Destanie on a daily basis.
"That not only helps Destanie, but it helps us as well," Jackie said. "Most of them are going to be overseas during the upcoming holidays and it's good for us to be able to keep in constant contact with her to keep her spirits up."
Frifth said she is looking forward to coming home to Alabama and being with her family.
"I'm looking forward to getting some home-cooked meals and being able to just relax around the house," Frifth said. "I'm definitely looking forward to seeing my parents."
Jackie said it wouldn't be until sometime next year before her daughter returns to the United States. Destanie will celebrate her 22nd birthday on Nov. 3.
"She's doing very well and is glad to be doing what she's doing. Being an Army brat, Destanie has been surrounded by military, so it is something she's been familiar with for many years," Jackie said. "We can't wait for her to come home."
Jackie said for those who are interested in sending notes or care packages to the military personnel overseas, they can call her at home at 430-3254.
"Like I said, so many of them are going to be there during the holidays and we need to do everything we can here at home to show our support, keep their spirits high and to wish them the very best in what they are doing," Jackie said. "I will be more than happy to help in coordinating any type of messages or care packages that folks here would like to send overseas."
