Barry Klemper, a schizophrenic who fancies himself to be a golf pro without ever bothering to actually learn how to play the game, is a character that Bob Jones High School Drama Teacher Dwayne Craft finds to be demanding on both the visceral and intellectual level.
When the curtain is raised on Theatre Huntsville's January revival of The Boys Next Door, Craft will find himself in front of the lights instead of behind the scenes. The Boys Next Door will open at the Von Braun Center Playhouse on Friday, Jan. 17, at 7:30 p.m. with evening shows on Jan. 18, 23, 24 and 25. A Sunday Matinee will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19.
The show revolves around four developmentally disabled adults living in a halfway house along with their big brother and caregiver. The show peers into their day-to-day lives. For Craft, the show is another addition to his dramatic career in the area. He has been a participant in area-wide community theatre production since 1996 – including the Athens State Dreamsleeves Players, Theatre 'Round the Corner, Theatre Huntsville, Renaissance Theatre, and the Huntsville Little Theatre. His acting, technical directing and consulting includes such shows as The Glass Menagerie, A Few Good Men, and How the Other Half Loves.
Craft is now working toward the formation of a community theatre venue in Madison. At Bob Jones, his accomplishments include winning Best Director at the Southeastern Theatre Conference's Secondary Schools Division Play Festival in the production of The Tower.
