Area athletes to compete in All-Star Sports Week

Madison Academy head football coach Eric Cohu will lead a contingent of more than a dozen local athletes in the 14th annual Alabama All-Star Sports Week beginning Monday in Huntsville.
This will be the final year for the All-Star Sports Week to be held in north Alabama, ending a six-year run that started in 2005.
The week-long event will return to Montgomery in 2011.
The boys’ and girls’ soccer games will open the week Monday at John Hunt Park.
The girls’ game will be played at 5 p.m., with the boys game to be played at 7 p.m.
Bob Jones midfielder Johnathan Mitchell and Sparkman midfielder Steve Owens will lead the North boys’ all-star team, while Madison Academy defender Danielle Berryman and Bob Jones’ Jessica Salinas will play in the girls’ game.
The North-South baseball doubleheader, which will feature Madison Academy ace Drew Mobley, will be played Tuesday at Joe Davis Stadium.
Softball will be played Wednesday afternoon at the Metro Kiwanis Sportsplex. Sparkman’s Sarah Suggs and Tori Edwards play for the North team.
Bob Jones head girls’ coach Kent Chambers will serve as the adminstrative coach for the North softball team.
Volleyball and basketball will be played Thursday at Spragins Hall on the University of Alabama at Huntsville campus.
The North-South volleyball game will begin at 2 p.m.
The girls’ basketball game – featuring Madison Academy’s Nyla Johnson and Amare Mayers, Sparkman’s Sharin Rivers and Bob Jones’ Rikaya McKinnon – will tip-off at 5 p.m. at Spragins Hall.
Madison Academy’s Spencer Palmer and Sparkman’s Jamar Pope will play in the boys’ game at 7 p.m.
Bob Jones head girls’ coach Tim Miller will serve as the adminstrative coach for both North basketball teams.
The week’s final event – the 52nd annual North-South Football Classic – will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Alabama A&M’s Louis Crews Stadium.
The South all-stars lead the series 28-21-2, but the teams have split the last 10 meetings.
Cohu will be an assistant coach for the North squad.
Bob Jones’ Steve Ballard, a 6-foot, 250-pound defensive linemen will play for the North squad. He is headed to the University of North Alabama this fall.
