Lawson, Bob Jones get week off before playoffs start

MADISON- Caleb Lawson moved into the starting lineup at center two years ago and hasn’t budged since. As a junior he was the only new starter in a line that included seniors Kendall Randolph, Tucker Walters, and Ethan Ganuch.

This year he was the only returning starter on a line that has been shuffled but has come together the last few games. Lawson was named Bob Jones Player of the Week Oct 24 after the Grissom game, the third time this season an offensive lineman was named to the honor by the coaches.

The senior center for Bob Jones High School, who confirmed Friday he had received an offer to play football from the Division III Rose-Hulman Fightin’ Engineers following a 48-20 win over Buckhorn, is more than a solid lineman for the Patriots.

“I play football, am on the wrestling team, work with technical theatre and play rec basketball with my friends,’’ he said.

That’s not all. He also volunteers for work with kids at Daystar Church.

He also sports a 4.5 weighted GPA and scored 33 on the ACT. With those numbers he said he’d like to take a shot at getting into an Ivy League School and has had correspondence with Harvard.

In the meantime, he and the rest of the Patriots will have an open week before hosting Mountain Brook in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs.

In addition to Rose-Hulman, which is in Indiana, Lawson said he’s had some interest from other schools such as Kennesaw State and Harding.

Bob Jones coach Kevin Rose isn’t surprised he’s getting looks from college recruiters.

“He’s started every game the last two years and I think he’s had maybe one bad snap,’’ Rose said after Caden Rose passed for 355 yards in the romp over the Bucks.

“He’s consistent. He’s also a fine young man.’’

Lawson said he hopes to earn a degree in electrical engineering and work on light and sound productions, where he can “combine the math and science side of it with the creative side of it.”

Bob Jones finished the regular season 7-3 and 6-1 in region games and ranked No. 9.
