Madison Academy’s Calvin Walker Signs With UAH

MADISON- Calvin Walker signed a full athletic scholarship to play basketball with the UAH Chargers at a ceremony held in the MA Performance Center at Madison Academy High. He had verbally committed to the UAH program months ago.

“Madison Academy has given me the opportunity to grow both spiritually and athletically and has made a huge impact on my life,” said Walker.

The 6-foot-3 guard scored 13 points and 3 assists per game a season ago for the Mustangs, which finished 24-7 and was a Class 4A semi-finalists at the State Tournament. He led the team in field goal percentage (49-percent) and free throw percentage (86-percent) and led the team in blocked shots with 31. Mustangs head coach Andy Blackston said of one his five seniors on the team roster, “I think Calvin’s ability to shoot the basketball with accuracy and range makes him a perfect fit for the UAH system. His basketball intelligence and ability to throw the backdoor pass will help him adapt to a complex offensive system.”

The UAH program is in NCAA Div. II under the leadership of longtime head coach Lennie Acuff. Walker said of his choice of UAH, “Coach Acuff has built one of the top Div. II programs in the country and I wanted to be a part of that. The players and staff made me feel welcomed and comfortable. I have a tremendous amount of respect for Coach Acuff as a person and a coach.”

Walker, son of Marty and Joanna Walker, is a three-year starter for the Mustangs and was an honorable mention All-State player as a junior last season.

“Calvin is a rare player who is both talented and unselfish at the same time,” added Blackston. “He has won the respect of his teammates and coaches and is very deserving of this opportunity.”
