MCS wants your help in naming new elementary and middle schools

MADISON – While work continues on the site preparation for Madison’s newest elementary school, Madison City Schools wants your help in choosing a name for it and the new upcoming middle school.

Thursday night the MCS school board approved a proposal by superintendent Robby Parker to launch a survey asking the public to submit names for each school and for their mascots.

“I knew it was time to start naming the new elementary and middle school when I started getting letters from some of our students with names for the new schools, and even mascots,” Parker said. “The first letter I got was from a student at Liberty Middle School, who said ‘I really think the new middle school should be called Tranquility, because it’s right in line with Discovery and Liberty and they should be the Tigers, because you already have panthers and you have lions.”

Parker added, “I kept the letter because it’s really a good idea. I am sure we will have other tremendous ideas too.”

Madison residents overwhelmingly approved a 12-mill property tax increase in September to fund the construction of the schools, plus additions at Bob Jones and James Clemens. Construction for the new elementary school is expected to begin in early spring with a planned opening for August 2021. Work on the middle school could also begin in spring for a projected opening of August 2022.

The survey is open to everyone and you can suggest more than one name. Click here to access the survey.

“They can tell us anything and we will sit down and look at it,” Parker said. “The sky is the limit. They can go ahead and tell us what they want to call it.”

“This is a great for generating excitement and allowing people to participate,” said Madison City School Board President Renae Bartlett. “I love that our students have already started writing you. I can’t wait to see what they come up with.”
