Rocket City Marathon Featured More Than 1,000 Finishers- 81 From Madison

HUNTSVILLE- The 43rd running of the Rocket City Marathon featured more than 1,300 who lined up at the start line in downtown Huntsville with 1,016 official finishers who came across the finish line located in the South Hall of the Von Braun Center. In between, the runners made their way through 26.2 miles of many sections of the beautiful confines of Huntsville.

The race was sponsored by Fleet Feet Sports of Huntsville.

Spencer Fields, 22, of Kingston, Ga. was the overall winner with a finish time of 2 hours, 25 minutes, 9 seconds. The top female finisher was Joy Miller of Lexington, S.C. The 32-year old finished with a time of 2:46.25. Fields edged second place finisher Andrew Lesser, 29, of Eaton, Co. who completed the race at 2:26.01.

Both Fields and Miller took the $1,000 prizes as top finishers.

Madison was well represented as perennial top performer Josh Whitehead, 41, finished fifth with a time of 2:36.33. The 2013 marathon winner led the 81 finishers from Madison with 36-year old Jordan Rundell the second best Madison time of 3:05.49. Madison’s top female was Rachel Negron, 42, who posted a finish time of 3:40.42. Her time was nearly 18 minutes ahead of runner-up Lindsay Grissom, 26, with her 3:58.15 finish time.

The eldest from Madison to complete the course was 67-year old Steve Leonard with his finish time of 5:33.01 while the youngest was Ryan Goldsmith, 16, who took the course at 4:12.04.

Weather conditions were not perfect for marathon runners as overcast skies combined with a 44-degree temperature and 80-percent humidity made for a sticky run.
