MADISON AND HUNTSVILLE – A storm system that left parts of Mississippi damaged Tuesday evening also created some havoc in the Madison area last night. Although the city and surrounding areas received relatively light damage compared to our neighbors to the west, it did knock out power for about 14,000 Huntsville Utilities customers.

Officials with Huntsville Utilities said the outage was caused by a tree falling into power lines, which caused multiple substation breakers to open. Once the tree was removed and the damage repaired, crews were able to reset all the breakers and restore service.

Huntsville Utilities said they quickly responded and had service restored to a majority of customers by 9:30pm, with remaining customers regaining power shortly afterwards.

“We want to thank our customers for their patience as our line crews worked to restore power as quickly and safely as possible,” a Facebook post from Huntsville Utilities stated. “We would also like to express our appreciation for the many, many messages of support they received via social media during the outage. We will make sure our crews see them.”
