Mustangs Dominate All Region Football Team Honors

MADISON- The Madison Academy Mustangs dominated Class 4A Region 7 with an undefeated regular season in 2020 and continue their commanding place in the region by earning three major awards in the end-of-season All-Region Team.

The Mustangs pulled in three of the eight major awards by taking the Player of the Year, Two-Way Player of the Year and Coach of the Year honors. The awards stem from Madison Academy posting a perfect regular season 10-0 record with a 7-0 mark in Region 7 play. The Mustangs lost in the second round of the state playoffs to Northside 28-21, but had stellar statistics as a team scoring 32.6 points per game and allowing opponents just 13.4 points per outing in the nine games they physically played due to the pandemic. The region title was the 15th in the program’s history dating back to 1975.

Player of the Year is quarterback Avery Seaton (5-10, 200) who combined for over 3,000 yards of offense. The senior had over 2,000 yards passing and over 25 touchdowns along with over 1,000 yards rushing tallying 15 touchdowns. He is rated the No. 1 quarterback in Class 4A, but has verbally committed to attend UAH on a baseball scholarship.

“Avery is an outstanding young man that has worked really hard to improve as a quarterback,” said Bob Godsey, head coach of Madison Academy. “It is exciting to see him get the recognition he deserves.”

Two-Way Player of the Year is Tim Spurlock (6-1, 210). The junior wide receiver and defensive back had 17 receptions and six touchdowns as a receiver while posting 89 total tackles on defense plus one interception and two blocked punts.

“Tim is a hard worker that continues to mature and has only scratched the surface of his ability,” said Godsey. “He had an outstanding junior year on both sides of the ball and will be fun to watch next year.”

As for Godsey, he earned the Coach of the Year honor in just his second season as head coach of the Mustangs’ program. In his career, he has won over 75-percent of his games and a Class 5A state championship in 2011 while head coach at Hartselle.

Overall, Madison Academy had 10 other players named to the All-Region Team along with three who were named Honorable Mention selections. Nine of those selections are juniors with one being a freshman, which means Godsey will have a banner of talent returning in 2021.

Those selected include: Kanen Hamlett, WR/LB (6-4, 225, Jr.), Kaden Young, OL/DL (6-4, 300, Jr.), Will Stokes, RB/DB (5-9, 157, Jr.), Jailen Holmes, WR/DB (5-11, 155, Jr.), Ian Vachon, K (5-10, 155, Jr.), Blake Helton, RB/DB (5-9, 175, Sr.), Holden Blake, QB/LB (6-1, 185, Jr.), K.J. Rogers, WR/DB (5-11, 160, Jr.), K.D. Cherry, WR/DB (6-0, 188, Jr.) and Chuck Moore, LB/RB (5-8, 185, Jr.). Honorable Mention selections were Jacob Schmidt, OL/DL (5-11, 209, Sr.), Brent White, OL/DL (6-0, 255, Sr.) and Reese Baker, OL/DL (6-2, 235, Fr.).
