All-State Football Teams Feature Nine Local Players For 2020
MADISON- The four local high schools in the immediate area of Madison were well represented on the 2020 Alabama Sportswriters Association All-State Football Teams selected at the completion of the 2020 campaign.
Both Bob Jones and Madison Academy led the entourage in the All-State selections with three players each listed among the first and second team and honorable mention elite players.
For Bob Jones, the three selections sort of helped remove the sting of suffering through a 3-7 record during the recent schedule, a second consecutive losing record in Class 7A. The Patriots posted a 2-5 record in Region 4 scoring 20-points per game while allowing 30 per outing. James Clemens (8-3, 6-1) had one player chosen after a season where the Jets lost in the first round of the post-season playoffs to Hewitt-Trussville, but scored 31 points and allowed 21 per game. Sparkman (6-5, 5-2) had two players chosen among the All-State teams after scoring 21.5 and allowing 19.5 points per game. Madison Academy, playing in Class 4A, Region 7 (10-1, 7-0) posted an undefeated regular season before falling in round two of the state playoffs. The Mustangs put on 40 points on the scoreboard and allowed just 16.5 through the 2020 campaign.
“I’m blessed to earn first team All-State,” said Tim “Deuce” Spurlock of Madison Academy of his first team selection at defensive back. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound junior had 89 tackles, two interceptions, three sacks along with two blocked punts. The Mustangs also had a second-team selection as Kaden Young (6-4, 300, Jr.) was tabbed as an offensive lineman and Avery Seaton (5-10, 200, Sr.) as a honorable mention at quarterback. Seaton was named Region 7 Player of the Year.
Bob Jones’ selections included three players on the second-team. Senior Drew Lawson (6-3, 300, Sr.) was selected at offensive lineman where he graded 90-percent on the season with 31 pancakes and zero sacks allowed. Defensive back KeyShawn Feagins (6-0, 175, Sr.) was among those selected at defensive back after he posted 44 solo and 29 assisted tackles with five interceptions and one blocked fled goal in 2020. Completing the three Patriots chosen was Maddox Sunderman (6-4, 285, So.) who at offensive lineman graded 81-percent with 28 pancakes and zero sacks allowed. He was chosen in the Athlete division.
Those from Sparkman High chosen included First-Team member Tyler Vickery (6-1, 195, Sr.) who was chosen at linebacker and second-team selection KaRon White (6-2, 280, Sr.) at defensive lineman.
The lone selection from the James Clemens Jets was Jamal Mayers (5-10, 170, So.) who was named as a defensive back as a sophomore and should be a talent to be reckoned with two additional years of playing time for the Jets.
