MADISON – A better understanding of local and state politics and a chance to meet new friends from across the state await delegates to the 2021 Alabama Boys State convention.

Boys State will meet on July 11-17 on the campus of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Madison American Legion, Post 229 will coordinate applications and selection of delegates. Alabama American Legion posts sponsor Boys State.

This educational and social experience is open to male students who have completed their junior year of high school in public, private or home school in Madison County and who meet conference qualifications.

“This program provides an opportunity for outstanding young men to experience democracy at work, enhance their leadership skills and learn from Alabama political and business leaders,” Larry Vannoy  said. “Those boys elected Governor and Lieutenant Governor in 2021 will be Boys Nation representatives.” Vannoy serves as Post 229 Commander and Madison County Commander.

Legionnaires encourage candidates to review the Alabama Boys State website at alboysstate.org.

Delegates will be invited to attend orientation for Madison County Boys State on June 29 at 6 p.m. at American Legion, Post 237 in Huntsville. “This opportunity will allow the boys to discuss what to expect and how to get the most of their Boys State experience,” Vannoy said.

“The Boys State program was founded by the American Legion in 1935 and has been attended by many future leaders in our state and nation,” Vannoy said. “The American Legion believes that it is important to train our young men in the ideals and objectives of American government.”

“By teaching our youth to understand and appreciate the basic principles involved in the successful management of a democratic society, we can keep America strong and ensure freedom for future generations,” Vannoy said.

Attendance at Alabama Boys State is one of the highest honors granted to Alabama students. These students have demonstrated leadership traits, hard work, strong morals and motivation in school and community activities.

Boys State delegates can participate in a mock government and listen to and meet Alabama leaders, such as U.S. Congressmen, state elected officials, business leaders and civic professionals. For recreation, the boys can participate in basketball, volleyball, softball, soccer and academic bowl.

School counselors can provide applications or email Tom Paone at paonetech@gmail.com. Registration cost is $225 per delegate. The first 54 students to apply and request a seat can have free transportation. Application deadline is May 31.
