Congressional Medal of Honor recipient to speak in Huntsville on birthday of U.S. Army

HUNTSVILLE – Captain Mike Rose, one of only 70 living recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor, will be the speaker for the June meeting of the Tennessee Valley Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution (TVCSAR).

Captain Rose was awarded the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest award for military service, for his multiple life-saving efforts over a three-day period as a Special Forces Medic during the Vietnam Conflict.

The meeting will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 14, in the Community Meeting Room of the First Baptist Church on St. Clair Avenue in Huntsville.  The 14th of June is the birthday of the U.S. Army, which was created as a result of a resolution by the Second Continental Congress on that date in 1775. (The meeting room faces St. Clair Avenue, not Governor’s Drive like the main sanctuary building.)

Jess Brown with the TVCSAR said the regional chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution is using the event to honor Captain Rose, and to commemorate the historic date of the creation of this important national institution. “The Army is an integral part of the Huntsville region’s phenomenal growth since WWII,” he said. “The SAR also feels a special obligation to remember the origins of the Army since its roots stem from the actions of the nation’s original Patriots and Founders.”

June 14 is also Flag Day in the United States as a result of the Continental Congress establishing the basic layout or design of Old Glory on that day in 1777.  That action by the Continental Congress also had a lasting impact on the history of the nation.

The 200+ member regional chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution consists of persons who are all bloodline descendants of those original Patriots who took up arms to gain American independence and establish the United States.
