TROY- Troy University has fired its football head coach with one game remaining on the 2021 schedule.

Chip Lindsey, a graduate of Bob Jones High in 1992, was released of his duties as head coach of the Trojans after the team’s disappointing 45-7 loss to Appalachian State, which put the program at 5-6 on the season. Lindsey went 15-19 in his three seasons at Troy. Before taking the position at Troy the 47-year old Lindsey was offensive coordinator at Auburn, Arizona State and Southern Miss.

Troy athletic director Brent Jones released this statement about his move to remove Lindsey. “After significant review, a change in leadership is needed. I met with Coach Lindsey and informed him that we would be making a change effective immediately. Our expectation for our football program is to compete for championships and that has not waivered.”

Lindsey had his own statement released, which read, “Ultimately, we fell short of our goal of producing a championship-winning team. I am grateful to the administration at Troy for giving me this opportunity to serve as head coach. I would like to thank my family for their unwavering love and support.”

Lindsey was a four-sport athlete at Bob Jones and attended both North Alabama and Alabama to earn his degree. He later earned a master’s degree in educational leadership from the University of Phoenix. Upon completing his college education he coached high school teams before moving to the college ranks.

In 2013, Lindsey was an offensive analyst for Auburn in its run to the National Championship Game in which the Tigers lost to Florida State 34-31.

Lindsey and his wife, Cecily, have four children.
