School board member resigns, city council to appoint replacement

The Madison City Board of Education bid goodbye to one of its board members tonight.

Greg Hulsey, appointed in June 2019, is resigning for professional reasons that uprooted his family to Birmingham. The Madison City Council appoint a successor to fulfill the remainder of Hulsey’s five year term.

Superintendent Dr. Ed Nichols and fellow board members Tim Holtcamp (president), Travis Cummings (vice president), Alice Lessmann and Scott Newberry all thanked him for his service and spoke highly of him as a fellow board member and public servant to the district.

Hulsey said he has deep regrets for not being able to fulfill the remainder of his term but the professional opportunity was best for him and his family’s future.
He thanked the City Council for appointing him, board members, Dr. Nichols, administrators, teachers and other employees for the hard work they pour into MCS daily and said he has a new appreciation for all it takes to run a school system like Madison.

His advice to his successor is to always consider other perspectives because MCS serves a large base of students and constituents. “They all matter. Think globally and look after everyone.”

Hulsey also said he appreciated the insights he learned from former Superintendent Robby Parker, and former BOE members Luis Ferrer and Ranae Bartlett.
