Students in grades K-11 earn City Chess Champ titles

MADISON – At the ninth annual Grade-Level City Chess Championship, tournament officials crowned a City Champion for each grade.

Madison City Chess League or MCCL presented the event on March 1-2.

“James Clemens High School did a great job hosting the championship,” MCCL Executive Director Todd Guthrie said. “It was an open championship where any scholastic player could register to compete by grade level.”

State Rep. Parker D. Moore sponsored the championship.

Students in grades K-11 competed in the championship:

* Grade 11 — Grattan O’Neill, Huntsville resident, first place; Co-City Champions Jason Park and Steven Pan, tie.

* Grade 10 – City Champion Andrew Yang; Caroline Wang and Artem Starenki, tie, second place.

* Grade 9 — City Champion Jacob New, first place; Sean Rowe, second place; Pragya Kothari, third place.

* Grade 8 — Co-City Champions Kate Meyer and Cooper Meyer, tie, first place; Caden Jordan and Daniel Tkach, tie, third place.

* Grade 7 — City Champion Sophia Jerez, first place; Lex Sansom and Cathy Liao, tie, second place.

* Grade 6 — City Champion Andrew Tkach, first place; Jackson Moore and Emerson Phillips, tie, second place.

* Grade 5 — City Champion Esteban Jerez, first place; Kylie Zou, second place; Theodore Piper, third place.

* Grade 4 — Co-City Champions Avyaktha Subramania, Jonathan Lam, Lucas Osipychev and Samuel Ellis, tie, first place.

* Grade 3 — City Champion Milan Malak, first place; Alice Zou, Ananth Ravishekar, Charlie Saulters, Rais Nichols and Arjun Sathees, tie, second place.

* Grade 2 — City Champion Samuel Liao, first place; Pratham Kothari, second place; Rhema Gosier and Austin Pullum, tie, third place.

* Grade 1 — Co-City Champions Warner Smith and Henry Saulters, tie, first place; Rishika Baipu, Colin Pitchko and Andrew Wyatt, tie, third place.

* Kindergarten — City Champion Theodore Malak, first place; Barrett Smith and Sam Hall, tie, second place.

In other chess news, Alice Zou is the newest member of MCCL’s 1,000 Club. “Alice is a third-grader from Horizon Elementary School. She first broke through 1,000 in the Championship Warm-up Quads and improved her rating in the City Chess Championship,” Guthrie said.

“Alice currently has a regular rating of 1,062 and a quick rating of 1,066,” he said.
