Discovery goes back-to-back county championships

MADISON- Discovery made it two in a row as Madison County baseball champions on April 20.

It wasn’t easy though. Buckhorn had already knocked out #2 seed Liberty and had won game one against Discovery. Caden Rose pitched and collected several hits in game two as Discovery claimed a dramatic 6-5 win to force a deciding game three. In that game a home run by Dylan Ray finally gave Discovery the runs they needed in a 3-1 win.

Liberty Middle hosted the tournament this year.

Rose played shortstop when he wasn’t on the mound. Dylan Ray played left field and normally pitches but an injury kept him off the mound. Wyatt Duthu pitched game one and played second and short.

Those three were named All-Tournament but there were a lot of players who could have got those honors too head coach Jesse Wood said.

“Winning this tournament was a total team effort and I would like to thank the assistant coaches, parents, and players for two great seasons,” said Wood who is in his eighth season as head coach.

“I was only able to select three players for all county but we could have easily had more. Cam Hill had four hits in game two. Stewart Edge had two hits in game 3. Ryan Crawford, Tyler Jones, and Brett Brosnan also played great for us.”

Discovery defeated Meridianville 11-1 in the second round. Overall, they won 19 games this season.

“Caden Rose, Dylan Ray, and Wyatt Duthu played great all season and had huge impact on our success. I’m extremely proud to have coached them and can’t wait to see the success they will have at Bob Jones on and off the field. Earning All-County is just the beginning of three bright careers in baseball,” Wood said.

All three come from athletic families. Rose is the son of Bob Jones Head Football Coach Kevin Rose who played quarterback at Muscle Shoals in high school. Ray’s sister is McKenna Ray who is a catcher for the Bob Jones softball team and has signed to play in college. Duthu has a sister who also played softball for Bob Jones.

Rose played quarterback for the Discovery football team. Ray, who is already 6-foot-2, played receiver and was his favorite target.
