Jessica Brooke Bradley, a ninth grader at Discovery Middle School, has been named by the U.S. Achievement Academy as a United States National Award winner in art and science. Bradley is the 15-year-old daughter of Rose and Jeff Bradley of Madison.
This prestigious honor is bestowed upon fewer than 10 percent of all American high school students. The Academy selects USAA winners upon the exclusive recommendation of teachers, coaches, counselors and other qualified sponsors and upon the USAA Standards of Selection. Selection criteria include academic performance, interest and aptitude, leadership qualities, responsibility, enthusiasm, motivation to learn and improve, citizenship, attitude, cooperative spirit and dependability. Discovery Middle School's art teacher Raquel Spiegal and science teacher Cathy Sperr nominated Bradley for the honor.
"She is a very meticulous and focused young lady," Spiegal said. "She is truly dedicated to art and is always looking forward to her next project. I am excited about having her in my class."
A white charcoal portrait of President Kennedy done by Bradley is on display at the Regions Bank location on Hughes Road in Madison. Her artwork can also be seen during the forthcoming Panoply 2003 in Huntsville. She plans to enter an ink pointillism still life of a hummingbird.
Bradley will also appear in the nationally published U.S. Achievement Academy Official Yearbook.
"Recognizing and supporting our youth is more important than ever before in America's history," Dr. George Stevens, executive director of the USAA said. "Certainly, United States Achievement Academy winners should be congratulated and appreciated for their dedication to excellence and achievement."
