HUNTSVILLE – The punk rock opera “American Idiot” will appear in Huntsville for one performance.

The show will be presented in the Mark C. Smith Concert Hall at the Von Braun Center on April 17 at 7:30 p.m.

“American Idiot” was nominated for a Tony Award in 2010 as “Best Musical.” Green Day’s album won a 2010 Grammy Award for “Best Musical Show Album.”

“The rock opera centers on the fear and confusion after 9/11, but its themes of post-adolescent angst, love and loss are timeless,” Barry Sublett said. Sublett works as membership director for Broadway Theatre League.

The Broadway hit features little dialogue and relies on lyrics from Green Day’s album to execute the story line. The story is told from the viewpoint of restless youth who try to find meaning in a world of reality TV and dishonest politicians.

The show’s charts include “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “21 Guns,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” “Holiday” and the title track, “American Idiot.”

The show’s protagonists are friends Johnny, Tunny and Will who leave their boring hometown for big-city thrills. However, fate separates them as Johnny finds a love interest, Tunny enters the army and Will must return home.

Sets feature a collage of art and newspaper clippings and more than one dozen embedded television monitors. “Televisions flash everything from broadcast news, graphic warning messages and clips from recognizable TV series,” Sublett said.

Broadway Theatre League and Jerry Damson Automotive Group are presenting “American Idiot,” and Fox 54 is sponsor. “American Idiot” is not recommended for children young than 13 years old because of adult content and strong language.

Tickets start at $17 for students and $37 for adults, depending on seat location. Adults can save $10 by using the promo code IDIOT. For tickets, visit the VBC box office, call 256-518-6155 or visit ticketmaster.com.
