Goldston, Williams coach Discovery, Rainbow to more math honors

Math teams at Rainbow elementary and Discovery middle schools have multiplied their credentials at a contest in Birmingham.

The Rainbow team had only four students, one who is in third grade, yet they earned the second-place team trophy at the Alabama School of Fine Arts meet on Jan. 19.

Individually, Tony Tian won first place, while Corey Tolbert took fifth place and Aditi Limaye rated sixth. “Aditi’s sister, Maanasi, was the fourth participant,” Discovery coach Julie Goldston said. “The team chose Maanasi to represent them by picking up the team trophy. They are a special group of kids.”

Annie Williams coaches the Rainbow team.

Discovery’s seventh-grade team ranked as second-place team winners. Individual places went to Warren He, seventh; Shantanu Kadam, eighth; and Joseph Shi, ninth. Other members are Alan Grissom, Marshall Wu, Brett Manis, Sean Lee, Misa Ito, Jane Newberry, Kate Newberry and Chidubem Okafor.

In eighth-grade action, Discovery won another second-place trophy. Individually, Winston Van earned third place and Joey Li, sixth. The team includes Ada Van Der Zijp-Tan, Daniel Li, Amelia Goldston, Jasmine Atassi, Tyler Tolbert, Hyun-woo Kim and Tahseen Robbani.
