ReadyFest 2020 to prepare residents for unexpected

MADISON – Madison ReadyFest 2020’s slogan urges individuals to realize, “When life happens, you need a plan!”

Madison ReadyFest is a free community-preparedness fair, scheduled for Feb. 22 at Discovery Middle School, 1304 Hughes Road. Local professionals and business owners will present demonstrations and exhibits from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“I hope the atmosphere of ReadyFest builds a sense of community and optimism, as well as an awareness of resources and knowledge that are available in our community,” ReadyFest Chairman Rebecca Brown said.

“Our leaders are amazing, dedicated people who want to make Madison a better place to live. I’d like to think each of us can make Madison a little better by improving our self, our family and our community,” Brown said.

The City of Madison is supporting the event, which will feature presentations from Madison Police Department and Madison Fire and Rescue Department. Community vendors and subject experts will focus on ways for individuals to prepare and be equipped better for the future.

City officials and representatives will attend and discuss matters affecting Madison. The city contacts will include Gary Chynoweth, Director of Engineering for the City of Madison; Maura Wroblewski, District 1 Councilwoman with Madison City Council; and Mike Gentle, Director of Madison Public Works.

Personnel at more than 20 informational booths and exhibits will discuss topics such as 72-hour emergency kits, ham radio, gardening, healthy living, storm shelters, active shooter survival tips, bicycle maintenance, basic car servicing and first-aid fundamentals.

From 10 a.m. to noon, limited space will be available for a free, foundational CPR class. A HEMSI instructor will educate participants on the way to perform CPR in case of emergencies. This class is intended for emergency skill only and is not a full certification class.

“From being prepared for a severe weather event or even for financial safety, Madison ReadyFest can help prepare the whole family for the unexpected,” ReadyFest Publicist Carol Walker said.
