Hutt’s DAR award extends family legacy

The Hutt family experienced a bit of deja vu when Maddie Hutt received the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) citizenship award.

Maddie’s father Tom Hutt also received the DAR Citizenship Award when he was a junior at James W. Robinson Secondary School in Fairfax, Va. in 1981.

Maddie Hutt was born in Dothan while her father was stationed at Fort Rucker. She attended Clarksville (Tenn.) Academy and Jackson Elementary at Fort Campbell, Ky.

“From there, I moved to Naples, Italy and attended Naples Elementary School for military dependents,” Hutt said. “Because my mom is a teacher, she home-schooled me my last two years while in Italy so that we could travel.”

Travel, they did … to more than 20 countries, including Egypt, Turkey, Ireland, Scotland, Germany and The Netherlands. From Italy, the Hutts moved to Leesburg, Va. for her father’s work at the Pentagon.

In 2008, the Hutts moved to Madison when Tom Hutt retired from the U.S. Army. “We wanted to be near my mom’s parents. My dad was hired by a defense contracting company that was opening a new office here,” Hutt said.

“My parents loved the area. To them, it was a pretty easy decision to come here,” she said. “Madison has now become my hometown.” She is a junior at Bob Jones High School.

Compiling an impressive volunteer resume, Hutt has assisted Fields of Faith, Asbury Community Thrift Store, Relay for Life, Inside-Out Ministries, The Ark animal shelter, along with leadership councils for Fellowship of Christian Athletes and CrossPointe Church youth.

At Bob Jones, she also served as a Patriot Ambassador and belongs to National Honor Society. Hutt works part time at Chick-fil-A.

Tom Hutt works as director of EXPRESS Programs with QinetiQ North America. Maddie’s mother, Loriann ‘Rusty’ Hutt, teaches physical science at Westminster Christian Academy. Brother Thomas ‘Tad’ Hutt is a seventh-grader at Liberty Middle School.

In her spare time, Maddie Hutt enjoys spending time with friends, pursuing athletics and “anything outdoors.” She participates in cross-country and track and field at Bob Jones.
