Pre-schoolers through seniors can enter Alabama PTA Writing Contest

MADISON – A state group that supports schools and education is sponsoring a contest that challenges students to think about other people.

The Alabama PTA is accepting original work in its Diversity Writing Contest 2022. The contest is open to students in kindergarten through twelfth grade who attend a school that has a PTA group that is in “good standing.”

PTA officials believe that an organization that recognizes diversity will value those differences and similarities among people through its actions and accountability. These characteristics include age, ethnicity, gender, language, culture and socioeconomic status. (alabamapta.org)

PTAs can respect differences yet acknowledge shared commonalities that unite their communities. The group then can develop meaningful priorities, based on this knowledge, and genuinely represent their communities. When PTAs represent their communities, they gain strength and effectiveness through increased volunteer and resource support, the website states.

Student must write a one-page essay and use one of the following topics that consider the grade level:

* Grades K-8 – “Why is it important to have a school or community with people of different backgrounds?”

* Grades 9-12 – “What are ways to improve diversity and inclusion in your school or community? How would you implement these changes?”

Deadline for entries is March 15. Students should email their essays with completed registration form to alptadiversityinclusion@gmail.com. Winners will be recognized at an awards ceremony on April 24.

The first-place winner will receive $75. For second place, the prize money is $50. The student in third place will get $25.

Alabama PTA is committed to serving as an advocate for all children. The organization is dedicated to fostering a welcoming environment for all. Diversity and inclusion are integral components of PTA operations.
