MADISON – Chess aficionados in Madison have a competition opportunity available after Fall Break.
Sponsored by Madison City Schools, the Fall Scholars Chess Tournament is scheduled on Oct. 15 with a mandatory players’ meeting at 9 a.m. Madison Elementary School at 17 College St. will host the tournament.
“This is the only tournament of the year conducted by Madison City Chess League that is closed for Madison students only,” league executive director Ranae Bartlett. Madison students in grades K-12 are eligible.
“The tournament also is unique in that the top two elementary finishers in the Championship section in grades K-6 will be invited to train with the middle school chess teams for your feeder pattern,” Bartlett said. “The Championship section offers 60-minute games played in four rounds, while the rest of the sections (rated under 900 and non-rated) offer 30-minute games played in five rounds.”
The Fall Scholars Chess Tournament (Championship section) serves as the second qualifier for the City Chess Championship in April 2017.
“Potentially, eight more students will qualify in the Championship section in grades K-3, 4-6, 7-8 and 9-12,” Bartlett said. “Since the Championship section is for all Madison students rated 900 and above, all grade levels can register for the Championship section. Younger and older students (can) compete against each other.”
Deadline for online registration is Oct. 12. To register online, visit madisonchess.com and click “Events” and then click “Upcoming Events.” Scroll down and click “MCS Fall Scholars Chess Tournament.”
Registration fee is $20 for all sections. Contestants cannot register onsite.
The tournament offers two Rated sections (Championship and Under 900) and two Non-Rated sections (grades K-6 and 7-12). Winners in first through third places will receive trophies. Students in fourth through sixth places and top female will receive medals.
For the Championship Section, round times will be 9:15 and 11:30 a.m. and 2 and 4:15 p.m. For other sections, round times will be 9:15 and 10:30 a.m. and 12:30, 1:45 and 3 p.m.
