MADISON – Jennifer Flanagan is transferring from her alma mater to serve as assistant principal at James Clemens High School.

Flanagan, a 2006 graduate of Bob Jones High School, has been teaching there six years — most recently, tenth-grade English language arts. She was nominated for “Teacher of the Year” for the 2014 and 2015 school years.

“Teaching and serving students has always been my life passion. While teaching, I saw the profound impact that administration has in our system,” Flanagan said.

At Bob Jones, she also sponsored Beta Club, homecoming court, Student Government Association Executive Board and the sophomore class.

She became interested “in stepping into a leadership role so I could serve both teachers and students at a deeper level beyond my classroom.” At James Clemens, her work will concentrate on curriculum and instruction.

Working closely with school counselors, Flanagan will help in generating James Clemens’ master schedule and work as advance placement coordinator. “I’ll also organize events such as Open House and Awards Night,” she said.

Flanagan graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in secondary education for English language arts at the University of Alabama. She also has taught English at Holt high and Westlawn middle schools in Tuscaloosa.

From her years in school, Flanagan was most inspired by a teacher, now an assistant principal, who was a mentor to her as a student in the Madison City Schools system.

“This particular person has demonstrated to me for years the type of teacher and leader I strive to be,” Flanagan said. “Her energy and passion for serving others is undeniable and pervades any environment she is in.”
