MADISON – Three acoustic lyricists and vocalists will perform at the Madison Gazebo Concert on July 18.

Mary Justice Lucas will sing with her guests, Matt Morrow and Emma Klein.

“Music is what I love. Some people enjoy the melody but don’t pay attention to the lyrics and that’s okay, but my favorite part of a song is its lyrics,” 18-year-old Lucas said. She finds it impossible to avoid listening to “what is being said.”

She considers her sound attuned with Indie-Pop and inspirational but joined the Nashville Songwriters Association. Lucas captured first-place awards at the MOVA Songwriters Competition in Guntersville. She also rated in the Top Ten among vocalists at iPOP! 2010 in Los Angeles.

Three of Lucas’ original songs are “Safe and Sound,” “Fix You” and “Stay.” She has frequent gigs in North Alabama and Nashville.

“I love listening to the story being told in the song, just as much as I enjoy sharing stories in the songs I write. I write from my heart. Inspiration is all around me,” Lucas said. “I write about what I see and feel about the joys and disappointments of relationships. Songwriting and singing are like therapy.” (maryjusticelucas.com)

Morrow, a native Alabamian, has performed across the country and has a new album, “Burlap and Gold.” Morrow’s vocals fall into the folk genre, yet his voice has a subtle rasp that is heartfelt with a hint of blues. Early on during a chart, he convinces the listener about his message. (myspace.com/mattmorrow, Facebook/Matt Morrow)

Emma Klein, 14, is a songwriter from Huntsville. Klein describes her work as descriptions of “the angst of unrequited love, the pain of loss and hope.” She frequently performs in Huntsville and Nashville. (reverbnation.com/artist_2130918/bio? or Facebook/Emma Klein).

Laura Pope coordinates the gazebo concert schedule for the series sponsor, Madison Arts Council. The concerts are free. For more information, visit MAC’s website at artsmadison.org.
