MADISON – In its “Health Matters @ Madison” series, Madison Public Library soon will host a seminar about breast cancer.

Funding for Heath Matters @ Madison was provided by a generous grant from Huntsville Hospital Community Health Initiative, library branch manager Sarah Sledge said.

The seminar about breast cancer and women’s health is scheduled for May 30 at noon at the library, 130 Plaza Blvd. The event is free.

Sandra Cross will be guest speaker. A registered nurse, Cross works as a breast health specialist at Huntsville Hospital. “Sandy will provide information on the different types of breast cancer, self-examinations of the breast and early detection methods,” library programming clerk Teresa Allison said.

Both men and women are welcome to attend the session, considering the disease can threaten both genders.

“I counsel patients after diagnosis with breast cancer, go over their pathology report and help them navigate the decision process,” Cross said. Cross personally realizes the disease’s seriousness because four of her aunts have had breast cancer.

“Huntsville Hospital is truly about prevention and taking care of our patients and individuals who are unfortunate to be sick,” Cross said. “Huntsville Hospital is very community-oriented and takes pride in doing this. It’s a big part of whom we are.”

For the library seminar, Cross wants to educate the public about the 15 different types of breast cancer. “All of these cancers look different. The fingerprints of a patient’s breast cancer dictates the treatment she will get,” Cross said.

She also will discuss diet during breast cancer recovery and post-operation procedures.
