Kemi Loftin’s outreach leads to Discovery’s ‘Staff Member of the Year’

MADISON – Kemi Loftin knows that a student’s ability to learn is directly proportional to his or her health.

“Therefore, the role of school nurses in bridging health care, mental health and education is important,” Loftin said. She works as the school nurse for Discovery Middle School.

“I joined the Madison City Schools family in 2018, working at Discovery. I have been a school nurse for over 10 years,” Loftin said. She previously worked as Supervising (Monitor) School Nurse/School Nurse for Huntsville City Schools at the former Johnson High School and Highlands Elementary School.

“My goal is to be mindful of each student’s medical needs and mindful of parent and teacher responsibility to the student. I strive to ensure that each student receives professional care within my scope of practice while maintaining the student’s dignity, high self-esteem and consistency,” Loftin said.

Loftin believes her major success has been managing and navigating the care of students during the COVID-19 pandemic. “. . . all the while having to leave for two months off to honor my dying brother’s wish to come home and spend his last days on hospice and caring for him until his death,” she said.

Loftin earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Alabama in Huntsville and two associate’s degrees in general education and science from Northwest Shoals Community College. She is a native of Florence.

“I am the wife to an amazing man of 23 years and the proud mom of three children,” Loftin said. “My children attend the following schools: J.F. Drake State Community and Technical College in Huntsville; Alabama School of Cyber Technology and Engineering or ASCTE in Huntsville; and Discovery Middle School.”

Few people know that Loftin enjoys opportunities to sing. “I love cooking, reading and spending time with my family,” Loftin said.
