Edgecomb receives 2020 Madison City Community Orchestra Scholarship

MADISON – Susanna Edgecomb is the 2020 recipient of the Madison City Community Orchestra Scholarship.

Edgecomb graduated from James Clemens High School this spring.

“MCCO offers a modest scholarship to deserving high school graduates,” MCCO Director Sandy Weisner said. The award furthers the group’s ongoing mission to promote orchestral music and the arts.

In addition, the scholarship program encourages youth in the community to become involved directly in civic service and support, Weisner said. “To create a stronger MCCO and ensure our future, MCCO understands the need to promote a consistent flow of student talent into the orchestra.”

“Additionally, we recognize the need to encourage our students to reach beyond their classrooms and participate in a more diverse musical environment,” Weisner said.

Edgecomb has been involved with the orchestra for five-plus years. She has served on the MCCO Board of Directors, as student representative and has participated in all group activities.

“Susanna has worked tirelessly behind the scenes — making copies and sorting music, working our booths at the various events, setting up the stage for concerts,” Weisner said. “In addition, Susanna has represented MCCO at multiple events for the city as both our personal representative and a participant in our ensemble groups.”

Along with MCCO activities, “Susanna also maintained a high GPA at James Clemens and played in the Jets Band, serving as the horn section leader. Her plans are to attend the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa,” Weisner said.

Selection for the MCCO scholarship involves five elements.

* Complete the application for the MCCO Scholarship.

* Submit a brief one-page creative statement on one of the following options: “How will music impact your life beyond college?” “How as music shaped the way that you think and live?” “Describe the colors of music and how they pertain to your life.”

* Applicant must be a member of Madison City Community Orchestra and must attend all performances and rehearsals, unless excused by the director.

* Major is not required to be in music, but talent must be demonstrated, Weisner said.

* Applicant must provide a written letter of reference by a teacher. This contact does not have to be a music teacher.
