MADISON – Four students from Madison achieved academic records that qualify for the Top Ten at Calhoun Community College for the 2020-2021 academic year.

The college recognized its Top 10 students during a special Honors Day Program on the Decatur campus on April 30.

“Students that have a minimum GPA of 3.7 and have completed at least 35 semester hours qualify to be considered for the Top Ten student competition,” Carla Swinney said. Swinney works as Coordinator for Student Advocacy, Special Projects and Discipline at Calhoun.

Calhoun’s Student Services Department hosts an annual self-nomination process, which allows students to apply who have high academic records. A designated committee with Calhoun faculty and staff reviews each nomination packet to determine finalists for Top Ten.

The Top Ten live across North Alabama. Four live in Madison:

* Tyler Legere – Electrical and computer engineering major from Madison. His goal is to attend Lipscomb University and obtain a degree while continuing to play baseball. GPA 3.9.

* Mallory Lott – Business accounting major, Madison. Lott plans to graduate with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Alabama and pursue a career as a forensic accountant with FBI. GPA 4.0.

* Sarah Prater – Business administration major, Madison. After graduating in business from Calhoun, Prater will create a non-profit animal shelter to rehabilitate animals with behavioral problems. GPA 4.0.

* Brenna Sullivan –Nursing from Madison. Sullivan plans to earn a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Auburn University and pursue a graduate dual-track advanced practice degree, culminating as both Acute Care Nurse Practitioner and Doctorate-level Nurse Anesthetist. GPA 3.8.

Other students in the Top Ten are Barry ‘McCall’ Atchison, Hartselle, 4.0 GPA; Delanie Compton, Moulton, 4.0; Guy Greenhaw, Athens, 3.8; Sarah Khouri, Huntsville, 4.0 GPA; Jenna Marie Sica, Decatur, 3.8 GPA; and Easton Williamson, Hartselle, 3.8 GPA.

“Each year, we receive a large number of applications, which makes the judging process so competitive,” Dr. Patricia Wilson said. Wilson is Vice President of Student Services.

“We’re excited to announce that this year’s Top 10 Students are not only made up of highly driven scholars, but they have already demonstrated their exceptional leadership qualities and academic excellence during their time at Calhoun. For that, we are very proud,” Wilson said.
