Temperatures have been in the 90s the past few weeks and officials locally and statewide are urging residents to take extra safety precautions.

David Glassman, Madison’s emergency safety operations manager, said people need to stay hydrated those who are working outside in the extreme heat.

“Always drink something before you go outside to work,” Glassman said. “You don’t want to wait until you’re real thirsty while you’re working.”

He advises to stay away from caffeinated beverages, and says water is best to drink.

Glassman said the department has received a few calls about residents overheating

“A lot of people have been taken to the hospital in Huntsville and the risk is definitely going up every day,” he said. “The big thing is to watch children. They’re out playing and parents need to take that into consideration.”

Glassman also advises to wipe your face and neck with a cool towel.

“It will keep your main arteries cool and make you feel much better,” he said.

Below are some easy tips to staying cool

1. Drink lots of water, even if you aren’t thirsty.

2. Wear light-colored clothing

3. Do chores earlier in the day when it’s cooler

4. Don’t leave pets, elderly or children unattended

5. If you work outside, take plenty of breaks.

6. Stay in air conditioned areas if possible

7. If you feel overheated, get out of the sun

8. Don’t drink caffeinated drinks

9. Avoid hot foods and soups

10.  Use common sense
