The Heart of the Valley YMCA sent a press release announcing the appointment of Daniel Kasambira as the nonprofit’s new executive director of the Hogan Family YMCA. Kasambira will begin the post at the Madison branch on Jan. 5. He will replace Bev Snellgrove, who has been the interim director of the branch since May.

Most recently he was director of Alabama A&M University Student Health and Wellness Center in Huntsville for the past four years. Kasambira has previously worked as relationship manager for the Central Alabama United Way and as executive director of three YMCAs during his nonprofit career, with budget responsibilities of up to $4.4 million with membership bases exceeding 12,000 members.

Kasambira maintains active involvement in several community service organizations. He is currently the Board president of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of North Alabama, Governance Chair for Huntsville Community Drumline, Co-Chair for Family Field Day and Resource Fair and 2015 Kite Day Festival Co-Chair. He is a 2014 graduate of Leadership Huntsville Class 27.

The 68,000-square-foot Hogan Family YMCA opened in November 2010 and features an expansive indoor fitness center and elevated walking track, two Child Watch playrooms, spin room, group exercise room, basketball gym, several meeting rooms, teen center, climbing tree and indoor aquatics center with a six-lane swimming pool and children’s pool. An outdoor pool complex opened in June.

Kasambira received his undergraduate degree from Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester, N.Y. where he was a three-year starter on the basketball team. Daniel is married to Julian Kasambira and they have four children: Jamal, 21; Daniel, 15; Isaiah, 14; and Imani, 9.
