MADISON – It was an event months in the making and, according to those who organized it, couldn’t have come at a better time.

On April 11, Madison police officers, firefighters, HEMSI personnel and Public Works employees had exclusive use of the Hogan Family YMCA branch from 6–9 p.m. Family members of the first responders units were also invited to the event, which began with a brief presentation from Mayor Troy Trulock’s wife, Dana.

Trulock mentioned that since last November, when planning began for the First Responders Appreciation Night, Madison saw the “worst ice storm in 20 years” hit the city in addition to the area’s registering the snowiest February since 1894.

Public Works employees alternated working around the clock to clear the city’s roads during the winter weather, while police, fire and HEMSI personnel responded to calls.

“All I have to say is thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you,” Hogan Family executive director Daniel Kasambira said at the event’s introduction.

Sub Zero Ice Cream & Yogurt provided dessert after attendees got their fill of Domino’s Pizza and drinks donated by Buffalo Rock. The Madison Chamber of Commerce coordinated goodie bags for all who came.

Systems Products and Solutions (SPS) out of Huntsville donated money for the event, part of which came in donations to the different first responder entities. SPS CEO Nilmini Thompson presented $1,250 each to the Madison Fire Department, Madison Police Department and Madison Public Works, and donated $350 to HEMSI.

The facility’s indoor pools, basketball gym, racquetball courts, climbing tree and fitness areas were utilized by those who attended. The child watch area was also serviced.

Organizers of the YMCA- and city-sponsored event said they hope to start a new tradition with the appreciation night by holding it next spring, as well.
