School district transitions to volunteer support for food distribution program

MADISON – Incoming Madison City Schools Superintendent Dr. Ed Nichols joined MCS staff and volunteers last week in the school district’s food distribution operations. Dr. Nichols boarded a school bus for deliveries into neighborhoods, then worked the car line at the grab-n-gos at Discovery Middle.

Last week marked the end of the school bus food distribution program. MCS will be pivoting its feeding program to community-based support .

Starting June 2, from 11-1 at Discovery Middle School, 1304 Hughes Road, and every Tuesday, area volunteer support organizations will be offering a light, non perishable food bag pickup. The Tuesday pickup be in the back of the school by the lunchroom.

“This is made possible by wonderful churches and support organizations with food pantries,” MCS spokesperson John Peck said. “We will continue to accept non perishable donations at a drop-off site in the covered area in back by the Discovery Middle.”

If there are special circumstances where you are unable to pick up food, contact our social worker, Briana Hawkins, at : bbhawkins@madisoncity.k12.al.us .
