Annual “Operation Christmas Clean Up” set for Jan. 8 at Madison City Stadium

MADISON – The Solid Waste Disposal Authority of the City of Huntsville (SWDA) and its curbside recycling program, Recycling Alliance of North Alabama (RANA), in coordination with the City of Huntsville, Madison County, the City of Madison and Operation Green Team are hosting the Third Annual “Operation Christmas Clean Up” on Saturday, January 8.

The event will be held from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. at two separate locations – John Hunt Park * (2315 Airport Road – entrance located on S. Runway Road) and the Madison City Schools Stadium (211 Celtic Drive).

“Over the past couple of years that we’ve held this event, we’ve seen tremendous success with residents bringing trees and other accepted recyclable materials to the event,” said John “Doc” Holladay, Executive Director of the Solid Waste Disposal Authority of the City of Huntsville. “We are thankful for our partners that team with SWDA to provide convenient drop off locations for residents’ extra holiday related items.

Operation Christmas Clean Up is a collection event where area residents can recycle their Christmas trees, flattened and broken-down cardboard boxes, batteries, and old electronics. To recycle a live Christmas tree, participants must remove all lights and ornaments. Items that will not be accepted are artificial trees, wrapping paper, and packaging materials (Styrofoam, plastic, straps).

“Our goal with this event is to offer a ‘one stop shop’ for area residents and give them a place to recycle all of the extra items that have accumulated during the holidays,” said Jesse Davis, Environmental Awareness Officer of the Solid Waste Disposal Authority for Huntsville.

“Christmas trees account for a lot of waste this time of year, and people rarely know how to properly dispose of them,” said Brian Walker, Director of Landscape Management. “We are making it easy for them with this free event.”
In case of rain, the event will be rescheduled on Saturday, Jan. 15. For more information, visit www.recycling-alliance.com.
