Huntsville Police officer charged with murder after shooting at apartment complex near Madison

HUNTSVILLE – A Huntsville police officer has been charged with capital murder for a deadly shooting at an apartment complex near Madison.

According to authorities, officers responded to a shooting Friday around 10 a.m. at Western Ranch Apartments, which sits just north of Hwy 72 behind Home Depot and Khols.

David Michael McCoy, 28, was arrested shortly after an initial death investigation Friday morning by the State Bureau of Investigation. Huntsville Police requested SBI take the lead because the shooting involved McCoy, an off-duty Huntsville Police officer.

WAFF reported a woman was found dead with a gunshot wound. “Sources familiar with the situation tell us, McCoy, who lives in the apartment complex as a courtesy officer, called in to dispatch of shots being fired,” WAFF reported.

According to McCoy’s jail records, the charge is capital murder of a victim in a vehicle. The name of the victim has not been released.
