Madison Area Lions collecting supplies for school nurses

MADISON – Members of Madison Area Lions Club are involved with a community outreach venture that will benefit youth in vulnerable situations.

The Lions are collecting supplies that school nurses can use in treating students with an injury or other minor health needs.

Madison Area Lions Club staged a collection site at Walmart Neighborhood Market, 7140 Wall Triana on June 18. Madison City Schools nurses will receive the goods. The Lions members also distributed promotional material about their club and accepted tokens for a give-away of a $50 gift card for Walmart.

“The primary purpose of the event was to collect needed supplies for the Madison City School nurses,” Lions Project Coordinator Tony Villamil said. “During this event, we collected approximately 15 cubic feet (or 3.5 large, moving boxes) of supplies for the school nurses with an estimated value of $400.”

The donated items ranged from baby wipes to Ziploc bags and bandages. The provisions will help in restocking day-to-day supplies for the nurses, Villamil said.

In addition, the club collected $266 in cash donations. “I want to thank the Harvest, Monrovia and Madison communities for their generous support. Following the Lions Club’s mission, we will be donating this money back to these communities as we support our school nurses,” Lions Club President LaToya Dorsey said.

The club also provided shoppers with information on the local Lions Club and the support that the club provides to the Madison community. “Our club works hard supporting a variety of causes in the Madison area,” Dorsey said.

This year, the Madison Area Lions Club has completed vision screening for children, supported children who couldn’t afford an eye appointment and eyeglasses, sponsored a child to Alabama Lions Camp Seale Harris and supported the Lions “Recycle for Sight” program for collecting used eyeglasses.

“We continue to provide support where needed and hope this event introduces the club to new areas of the community,” Dorsey said.

The club also held a giveaway of a $50 gift card to Walmart. “We are pleased to announce that our winner is Tammie McCarty,” Dorsey said.

Madison Area Lions Club is always looking for new members who want to serve their community. The club meets monthly on second Tuesdays at IHOP on U.S. 72 (near Madison’s city limits).
