Record earns contest honors
The Madison County Record earned five awards in the Alabama Press Association Better Newspaper Contest. "This is exciting news for all of us at the Record," Publisher Leada DeVaney said. "Last year, the Record was named the most improved weekly newspaper in the state. This year, we've continued that trend. These awards are something our staff, readers and advertisers can all take pride in."
The Record received the following awards:
* First place, Best Printing
* First place, Best Use of Color/Editorial
* First place, Best Local Economic Coverage
* First place, Best News Feature Story
* Second place, Best Editorial Column
The Record was one of 76 newspapers taking part in the contest. More than 2,825 entries were submitted. The awards will be presented at the APA's 132nd annual summer convention held at Perdido Beach Resort at Orange Beach.

Talent contest coming July 5 The Tennessee Valley Talent Competition will take place on Saturday, July 5 at the Huntsville Von Braun Center beginning at 5 p.m. Competition for cash, trophies and gift certificates will include dancing, singing, bands and acoustic solo artists. Age categories are: 9-12, juniors; 13-15, teens; 16-19, seniors and 20 up, adults. A portion of the proceeds will go to Waiting Spouses, a local group of wives separated from their husbands who are on active military duty.
