YMCA offers membership assistance to furloughed federal employees
HUNTSVILLE — With the government shutdown still in effect, Heart of the Valley YMCA announced Jan. 16 that they will be providing financial membership assistance to local federal workers who serve in both civilian and military jobs.
This assistance to those hard hit by the current government shutdown includes financial assistance to Y members who have been furloughed by the federal government and free admission to non-members who are employed by the federal government but are currently furloughed.
“We understand that the recent furlough decisions will have an affect on many members of our community, and in response to that, we want to ensure that those affected by the current shutdown can still maintain a healthy lifestyle without financial hardship,” said Jerry Courtney, president and CEO of Heart of the Valley YMCA.
Y members affected by the government shutdown may request to have membership dues waived for the remainder of the furlough by bringing proof of federal government employment and proof of furlough status to their Y.
Community members affected by the government shutdown may use any Y branch in Huntsville and Madison free of charge by bringing a driver’s license, proof of employment by the federal government and proof of their furlough status to the Y.
“The Y is a powerful association of men and women with a heart for community, and it is through the generosity of other Y members who donate to the YMCA Annual Giving Campaign, local businesses and philanthropists who make this furlough assistance possible for us to provide,” Courtney said.
The Y provided more than $818,550 in subsidized membership and programs to the community in 2017.
Physical exercise has been proven to alleviate stress. Members and visitors may enjoy the full array of Y amenities including fitness centers, sauna and steam rooms, unlimited group exercise classes and free Child Watch at all three branches. Indoor swimming pools, indoor walking tracks, teen centers and racquetball are available at the Southeast and Hogan Family YMCAs.
